What is the Meaning of PVC
The acronym PVC stands for Polyvinyl chloride, which is one of the oldest (1930) and most used plastics. Thanks to its mechanical properties can be modified according to your need with extremely competitive cost, and can be recycled several times.
Light (1.4 g / cm3), which facilitates its handling and application;
Resistant to the action of fungi, bacteria, insects and rodents;
Resistant to most chemical reagents;
Good thermal, electrical and acoustic insulation;
Solid and shock-resistant;
Impermeable to gases and liquids;
Weather resistant (sun, rain, wind and sea);
Durable: its lifetime in buildings is over 50 years;
It does not propagate flames: it is self-extinguishing;
Versatile and environmentally friendly;
Recyclable and recycled;
Made with low energy consumption;
PVC is not a material like the others. It is the only plastic material that is not 100% originating in petroleum. PVC contains by weight 57% chlorine (derived from sodium chloride - cooking salt) and 43% ethylene (derived from petroleum).
From the sea salt, by the electrolysis process, chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen are obtained. Electrolysis is the chemical reaction that results from the passage of an electric current through salt water (brine). This gives chlorine, which accounts for 57% of the PVC resin produced.
Oil, which accounts for only 43% of this resin, goes through a slightly longer path. The first step is a distillation of the crude oil, obtaining light naphtha there. It then passes through the catalytic cracking process (breaking of large molecules into smaller molecules with the action of catalysts to accelerate the process), generating the ethene. Both chlorine and ethene are in the gaseous phase and they react producing DCE (dichloroethane).
From DCE, MVC is obtained (monovinyl chloride, the basic unit of the polymer. The polymer is formed by the repetition of the monomeric structure). The MVC molecules are subjected to the polymerization process, that is, they bind by forming a much larger molecule, known as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which is a very fine powder, white in color, and totally inert.
PVC's main raw material is sea salt, a renewable natural resource.
